By Komodo Cabin Charter Editorial Desk
Komodo cabin charter refunds depend entirely on the seller. Published lines fall at 90, 60, 30 or 14 days before departure, one marketplace listing allows cancellation up to 24 hours before, and one operator treats charter payments as non-refundable. Park tickets usually stay lost either way, so read your seller's ladder before you pay a deposit.
How do published cancellation terms compare?
No two of these five match, and none of them speaks for the market. Each row is one company's wording, for its own trips. We have not found any general refund rule or consumer regulation that sits above them, so the seller's terms are where you should expect the argument to end.
| Seller | Published ladder | Conditions it names |
|---|---|---|
| Komodo Trips (agent) | 30 days or more: full refund less an administration fee. Under 30 days: no refund. | Force majeure means rescheduling with no refund. Late arrivals forfeit. |
| Komodo Island Tour (agent) | 60 days out: may be eligible for a refund less admin fees. Within 30 days: may incur a 50 per cent fee. Under 30 days: generally non-refundable. | None in this clause |
| Dive Komodo (dive operator) | Deposit kept once three cooling-off days have passed. 14 days or fewer: 100 per cent forfeited. | Park tickets and third-party charges stay non-refundable. |
| Neptune Liveaboards (liveaboard operator) | 90 days or more: 90 per cent back. Later than that: nothing. | Group and charter payments non-refundable. No refund for itinerary changes made for safety. |
| GetYourGuide listing (marketplace) | Free cancellation up to 24 hours before start. | The final price may vary by date, participants and availability. |
Komodo Island Tour's clause needs care. As written, "within 30 days" and "under 30 days" describe much the same window and give it two different outcomes, and the clause says nothing clear about days 31 to 59. If you book with that agent, ask which line applies at the moment you are likely to cancel, and get the answer in a message you can keep.
The ladders look less abstract when you apply them to a date. Here is what each one says for an individual booking cancelled at four points before departure.
| Notice given | Komodo Trips | Komodo Island Tour | Dive Komodo | Neptune |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 100 days | Refund less a fee | Refund less fees may apply | Deposit lost after cooling-off | 90 per cent back |
| 45 days | Refund less a fee | Not clearly stated | Deposit lost after cooling-off | Nothing back |
| 20 days | Nothing back | 50 per cent fee or no refund; wording overlaps | Deposit lost after cooling-off | Nothing back |
| 10 days | Nothing back | Generally non-refundable | Full amount forfeited | Nothing back |
This is our reading of each clause, and it covers the seller's own charges only. The GetYourGuide row sits apart because its 24-hour line covers all four dates on that one listing. A wider window is worth something, so weigh it alongside the fare and read the listing's own conditions at the moment of purchase.
How do payment dates change what you can lose?
A ladder only tells you the share at stake. The payment schedule tells you how much of your money is in the seller's hands on that day, and on some published terms the two dates meet.
| Seller | When the balance is due | What that does to the ladder |
|---|---|---|
| Komodo Trips | On the departure date, collected by the boat organiser, after a deposit of at least 50 per cent | Under 30 days, the sum you have actually handed over is the deposit. Ask whether the balance is still owed. |
| Komodo Island Tour | 7 days before departure, after a deposit of at least 50 per cent | The final week is the point at which the full fare is in the seller's hands. |
| Dive Komodo | 14 days before departure, on liveaboards | The balance falls due on the same day the 100 per cent line begins. |
| Neptune Liveaboards | 90 days before departure, on individual bookings | Once the balance is paid, the 90 per cent refund line has passed or is about to. |
So the seller with the toughest-looking ladder is not always the one with the most of your money at risk on a given date. To see your own position, write out each payment with its date, then mark the ladder's lines on the same list. The day you make your largest payment and the day your refund drops are the two to look for. If they fall close together, as they do on the last two rows, you should be sure of your dates before that payment leaves your account.
How do charter terms differ from cabin terms?
The clearest split we have read comes from Neptune Liveaboards. Its individual bookings get a 90-day line with most of the money back. Its group and charter bookings get no refund at all. A private group should read that twice, since the whole boat is usually the larger sum, paid in stages, and none of those stages comes back on that operator's terms.
A second difference sits in who can drop out. On a whole boat, the rate does not fall when one friend withdraws inside a guest band, because the boat is what you bought, and bands can step. The people left behind carry the share. On a cabin booking the same problem takes another form. Private cabins need at least two guests at Salam Ransel, and a lone guest in one at Green Rinjani is billed as a pair. So if one of a couple cancels, the other may not simply lose half. Ask what happens to the remaining guest before you book, not after the friend has dropped out.
What happens to park tickets if you cancel?
Treat ticket money as gone once the tickets are bought. Samara Liveaboard reports no refund on a permit once bought, and since 22 September 2026 a ticket that works solely on its printed date. Dive Komodo says the park authorities do not currently refund them either. So this part of your outlay sits outside the seller's ladder altogether, however generous the ladder looks.
When you lose that money depends on the moment the seller buys. Dive Komodo collects full ticket payment up front. Neptune Liveaboards describes park charges paid in cash on board or at embarkation. Ask two things: have my tickets been bought yet, and will the refund statement show them as a separate line? The sequence of registration and name changes is set out in who arranges your park permit.
What if you arrive late?
You should assume the boat leaves and the money stays with the seller. At Dive Komodo the boat holds for 20 minutes after the meeting time at most, and a guest who misses it loses the whole trip amount. Komodo Trips says late arrivals forfeit. We did not see an exception for delayed flights in either, so raise your flight with the seller when you book.
The protection here is a spare night, not a clause. Salam Ransel advises arriving in Labuan Bajo a day before, and Komodo Island Tour highly recommends the same. Our page on when to arrive before boarding covers how to plan it.
What if the seller cancels or changes the trip?
That depends on why, and sellers draw these lines differently. Separate the event in front of you from the others, because each has its own wording.
| Event | What one seller says | What to ask yours |
|---|---|---|
| Force majeure | Komodo Trips moves the date and refunds nothing. Dive Komodo decides between refund and new date itself, and rules out knock-on losses such as flights. | Who decides, by when, and how long a new date stays open |
| Change made for safety | Neptune Liveaboards gives no refund for itinerary changes made for safety. | Whether a dropped stop earns anything back |
| Too few guests | Dive Komodo lists low participation among its reasons for altering a program. | Whether a thin departure can be cancelled or moved, and what you are owed |
Dive Komodo publishes no number of guests at which that low-participation line applies. Weather has its own page, with the closures that have already happened: what bad weather does to a charter. Flights and hotels lost to a change fall outside these terms, which is the main argument for checking your travel insurance.
What should you get in writing?
Everything above, in your own booking's terms, before the first payment. Ask for these, and keep the reply:
- The ladder itself, with each line given in days and tied to a clear starting date, such as the departure date.
- Which of your payments each line applies to: deposit, balance or both.
- Whether administration fees are a set amount, and what that amount is.
- Whether your booking counts as a cabin, a group or a charter under those terms.
- When park tickets get bought, and how they appear on a refund.
- What happens if one guest of a party withdraws.
- What the seller does in a closure, and who makes that decision.
- Who holds your money, if the seller is an agent. Green Rinjani limits its own role to booking and reservation, with the local boat operator responsible for logistics.
How much you have at stake on any date also depends on the payment schedule, so read this list together with what sellers ask as a deposit. We have an interest of our own here, since a request through this desk can lead to a contract with one of our group companies. Ask us the same eight questions, and do not accept "it depends" where a date belongs.
What else do guests ask about cancellation?
Can I get a full refund if I cancel a Komodo cabin charter?
Rarely in full. Komodo Trips refunds only after taking an administration fee, at 30 days or more, and Neptune Liveaboards returns 90 per cent at 90 days or more. A GetYourGuide listing allows free cancellation up to 24 hours before start, on that listing alone.
Is my deposit refundable?
Often not. Dive Komodo keeps the deposit once a three-day cooling-off has passed, and other sellers fold the deposit into a wider ladder. Ask what happens to the deposit by name, since a ladder may be silent about it.
Does a harbour closure earn me a refund?
Not under any general rule we have found. Komodo Trips' force majeure clause reschedules without a refund, and Dive Komodo's leaves the choice to the company. We cannot say whether these clauses treat a closure as force majeure; ask.
Are park tickets refunded if I cancel?
No, not once they have been bought, according to Samara Liveaboard and Dive Komodo. If the seller has not bought them yet, you may not have lost that money, so ask whether the purchase has happened.
Does one guest cancelling change the cost for the others?
Yes, it can. A boat rate does not fall when someone withdraws inside a guest band, and bands can step, while a private cabin may carry a two-guest minimum, as it does at Salam Ransel. Ask the seller how it treats a partial cancellation.
