Sourced figures: rates in the table carry their source and check month. Most are published by a single seller for a single boat, so they are not a market price, and nothing here is legal advice.

A cabin charter gets you one cabin or berth on a boat you share with strangers, at a per-person fare, on a program the boat sets. A private charter takes the entire vessel at one rate, with the itinerary settled between you and the operator. Small parties usually pay less in a cabin; a full boat can come close, and terms differ by seller.

What is the core difference between the two?

The unit of sale differs. Salam Ransel, an agent, draws the line this way: the shared buyer pays for a cabin on a departure others also join, and the private buyer takes the entire vessel and can change its route and timing. Komodo Resort, in its charter guide, adds that "yacht charter" and "boat charter" in Komodo both mean taking the entire vessel, captain and crew included, for a set period, at a price per boat.

The words overlap in listings, and that is where buyers get caught. This site uses "cabin charter" for the per-person product, as our overview of the Komodo cabin charter explains; sellers may call the same thing an open trip, a shared trip or a shared cruise. A listing that promises a "private cabin" is still a shared boat. Hello Flores, writing as a seller of one higher-grade shared cruise, describes a room, bed and bathroom to yourself, while the table, the activities and the timetable stay communal. So read two questions separately: who shares the boat, and who shares the cabin. Our guides to how a cabin charter works and reading a phinisi cabin list take those in turn.

How does the price basis differ?

A shared fare moves with the cabin. On two shared cruises listed by Labuan Bajo Tourism, the cabin you choose sets the price, with named suites highest. A private rate moves with the boat. Asik Travel explains why a boat carries one rate inside a band: running the boat costs no less with a small party aboard, so every added guest brings down each person's share. Asik Travel also publishes labuanbajotourism.com, so treat those two names as one seller's view.

Published examples of both formats are shown in the price table on this page. Each row belongs to one seller and one boat, so three cautions apply before you read across. Shared rows are per person and private rows are per boat, so a boat rate means nothing until you divide it by your headcount. Rows marked "from" are the lowest figure on that seller's list, not the fare for the cabin you may want. And the private rows spread widely even within one seller's range; we print that as published and draw no rule from it, so check each row at its source.

The same agent draws the headline contrast between two guests and ten: a pair taking a whole boat spends far more than sharing would cost, while ten people filling it come out close to ten shared places. That is the agent describing its own fleet. To repeat it on another quote, use our walk-through of how the per-person sum changes with guest numbers. For the full rate lists, see published cabin charter rates and published private phinisi rates.

Neither figure is your total. Komodo Resort puts diving, drone permits, alcohol and crew tips outside a typical private rate, and shared sellers leave out their own list of items. Comparing fairly means putting the same extras on both sides, which our guide to what a cabin charter includes and leaves out helps you do.

Who controls the route and timing?

On a shared boat, the program belongs to the boat. You join its departure days and its order of stops; Salam Ransel says departure days vary from boat to boat. On a private charter you have a say, but "agreed with the operator" is not the same as "anything you like". Four limits apply to both formats.

Also check who actually holds the decision. Green Rinjani, an agent, states that its role stops at booking and reservation and that the local boat operator handles logistics and any bad-weather change. If your seller works the same way, your route discussion is with someone you have not met. Ask who that is. For what happens to your money when plans change, read our page on weather bans and refunds.

How do deposits and cancellation differ?

On the published terms we can cite, they differ by seller as much as by format, and a charter puts more money at stake. Neptune Liveaboards is the clearest example because it writes both tracks down. Individual guests put down 30 per cent and settle the rest 90 days out. Groups and charters pay in three stages: a first 10 per cent, a further 20 per cent, and the remainder. On refunds, individuals get 90 per cent back if they cancel 90 or more days out and nothing after that, while group and charter payments do not come back at all. Safety-driven itinerary changes earn no refund either.

Komodo Resort's guide describes a different private pattern, the 50 per cent deposit shown in the table. Neither is a measure of the wider market.

Forfeit a cabin and you lose a fare. Forfeit a boat and you lose the boat rate, however many of your friends dropped out. If a charter depends on several households paying, settle what happens when one withdraws before the first payment goes out. Our comparison of cancellation terms and the deposit requests sellers publish go further than we can here.

Which suits couples, solo guests, families and groups?

  • Couples: usually a cabin. Asik Travel's point about a couple paying far more for a whole boat is the reason, and a private cabin keeps the bed and, on some boats, the bathroom to yourselves. See charter costs for couples.
  • Solo guests: a shared boat, with the cabin question still open. Salam Ransel sells a solo guest one place in a shared cabin, with two guests the minimum for a private one. Green Rinjani offers three routes: share a bed with other passengers, pay double for a private bed, or pay for two in a private cabin. The solo traveller guide covers this.
  • Families: often a charter. Komodo Resort favours a charter for families with small children, since naps and meals can set the day's pace, and suggests looking for deck railings and shade. Check the child rule too: Neptune Liveaboards bills a child of any age at the adult fare. See charter costs for families.
  • Groups: price both. The closer you get to filling a boat, the better the whole-boat sum looks. If you want to book every cabin on one boat, our guide to chartering a whole boat sets out how that works.

When is a shared cabin the wrong choice?

A low fare is the main attraction of a shared trip, and Komodo Trips says as much. These are the situations where that saving stops being worth it.

A couple who like meeting people and do not care about the route can spend a large sum on freedom they will never use.

How should you test either offer before paying?

Ask the same five things whichever format you lean towards: the boat's name and capacity; the exact cabin or beds you will use; every item outside the price, park charges first; the payment and cancellation schedule; and who decides on route changes. Set the written answers side by side, one row per boat. Our booking guide walks through the order.

That test applies to us as well. A request through our desk can end in a contract with one of our companies, as the about page explains, so we have an interest here. Put our offer through the same five questions, and read its cost and payment sections as closely as any other seller's. Nothing short of that written offer commits anyone.

Which published prices did we check?

Public rates and fees from third-party sellers and guides, each with its source and the month we checked it. Most of these are published rates for one seller or one boat, not a market average, and they can change without notice; check the source before you rely on a figure.

What do buyers ask most about cabin and private charters?

Does an open trip mean the same thing as a cabin charter?

Yes, on this site's usage. Sellers also say shared trip or shared cruise. The test is the same whatever the label: you pay for a place or a cabin, and other travellers share the boat.

Is a private charter always more expensive than a shared cabin?

No, not per person once the boat is close to full. On Asik Travel's sum for its own boats, ten guests land near the cost of ten shared places. It is the couple alone on a boat who pay far more.

Can a private charter go anywhere at any time?

No. Komodo Resort describes the itinerary as agreed with the operator, and the captain, the harbour authority's night rule and the session on your park registration all set limits.

Are park fees included in either format?

Often not, so ask in writing. Salam Ransel leaves them out of its shared price and Komodo Resort says a private boat rate hardly ever covers them, yet Hello Flores counts them in on one shared cruise.

Can a solo traveller book a private cabin?

Yes on at least one agent's terms: Green Rinjani lets a solo guest have one by paying for two people. Salam Ransel also sets a two-guest minimum.
