By Komodo Cabin Charter Editorial Desk

Sourced figures: rates in the table carry their source and check month. Most are published by a single seller for a single boat, so they are not a market price, and nothing here is legal advice.

Komodo cabin charters are usually sold per person on shared boats and per boat on private ones, mostly from Labuan Bajo. Park entry is usually extra, and deposit and refund rules differ from seller to seller. Each short answer below names whose claim it is and links to the page that goes deeper, and the final section lists what no source can settle.

Use this page as an index. We name the source in each answer because most of what is published about Komodo boats comes from people selling them. An agent's terms are useful evidence of how that agent behaves, and they tell you little about the next seller.

How does a cabin charter work?

What am I buying? Space on a boat you do not control. As Salam Ransel describes it, shared-trip guests reserve a cabin and travel alongside other people, while a private group takes the entire vessel and may reshape its route and timing. Our Komodo cabin charter overview starts from that question, and the explainer on how a Komodo cabin charter works separates sharing a boat from sharing a cabin or a bed.

What is a phinisi? Strictly, a rig. The Wikipedia entry for pinisi describes a type of rigging that carries seven to eight sails on two masts. On listings you will mostly see the word used as a boat class, such as the luxury phinisi on Salam Ransel's list.

When do boats leave? Weekly, with days fixed per boat, according to the same agent, which gives Monday and Friday as an example. This site publishes no live departures, so confirm the day with whoever sells you the cabin.

Can one person book alone? Yes, with conditions. At Salam Ransel a lone traveller can buy into a shared cabin, though private cabins start at two guests. See the page for solo travellers for how another agent handles the same case.

Can a small group reserve several cabins? We have no source on this; ask. One Komodo Trips listing sets minimums of two or three guests by cabin type, which any split on that boat would have to meet. At some headcount a whole boat becomes the sensible comparison, and our page on group size and private charters looks at where that point falls.

Could a day trip do the same job? Partly. The Mini Adventures writer judged a single-day boat to match most of what the two-night trip offered, and named the Kalong bats as the main thing lost. Our liveaboard or day trip comparison weighs what else changes.

What does it cost and what is left out?

Is there a normal fare? We cannot defend a market average. Four reference lines appear in this page's price table: the lowest published superior and luxury rates on one agent's shared list, a whole-boat rate from another seller, and the operator-reported park ticket. Our pages on what a cabin charter costs and what a private phinisi costs carry the wider comparison.

What does a fare usually cover? Salam Ransel's typical shared price pays for the room, food and water, snorkelling kit, a local guide and a pick-up in town, while flights and travel insurance stay outside it. Other sellers draw the line elsewhere, which is why our inclusions comparison goes through it line by line.

How is the park ticket charged? As a flat daily charge for foreign visitors, on an operator's account. Neptune Liveaboards dates the present system to 30 October 2024: under a 2024 regulation, a foreign visitor pays one ticket a day, weekday or holiday alike, and Indonesians pay different weekday and holiday rates. Park fees on a charter has the detail.

How do deposits and refunds work?

When does the balance fall due? Each seller sets its own date. Komodo Trips collects it through the boat organiser on the departure date. The others in our deposit comparison want it before you sail, some of them months before.

Can I get my money back if I cancel? Often only with plenty of notice. Komodo Trips returns the fare minus an administration fee if you give 30 days or more, and nothing inside that. Its terms also treat late arrivals as forfeited. Other sellers draw that line elsewhere, and a GetYourGuide listing goes as far as free cancellation until 24 hours before the start. Read the cancellation terms compared by seller before you commit.

What if weather stops the trip? Komodo Trips treats force majeure as a reschedule with no refund. We know of no general refund right that covers a weather cancellation, so the terms in your own contract decide it. The harbour authority can close the sea for long stretches, as it did for more than a month around the 2025 to 2026 new year, on Indonesia Expat's report. Bad weather on a charter follows that through.

What rules apply inside the park?

Can I buy my own park ticket? Probably not. A guide from Casa de Capulet, a local guesthouse, checked in August 2026, says SiOra accepts bookings only from licensed operators, leaving individuals to go through one. Our page on permits under SiOra explains who does what.

Is there a daily cap? Yes. Neptune says advance registration has applied to every visitor since 1 April 2026, with at most 1,000 people admitted daily across the main sites and nobody sold a ticket on arrival. Sources disagree on how that splits between sites, as our page on site quotas sets out.

Do I need a ranger? Yes, on Komodo, Rinca and Padar, says Samara Liveaboard, and each group needs a licensed one. Its guide adds that you must keep clear of the wildlife, with no touching or feeding, and that flying a drone takes its own permit. The park rules page collects those limits.

How safe is it?

Have tourist boats sunk recently? Yes. Divernet reports that in October 2026 a pinisi-style dive boat with 25 passengers and five crew sank near Tatawa Island, with a police investigation still open when we last looked. It is not the only recent case, and our safety checks page records the others.

Do valid papers settle the question? No. The same report has the harbour authority saying that boat held the required documents and was considered seaworthy. Certificates are worth asking for and they cannot be your only test.

What can I check myself? A fair amount before you board. You can count the life jackets, ask about VHF radio and GPS, expect a briefing, and look hard at any extra deck built onto an older hull, all on Komodo Resort's advice. The same guide asks you to respect a captain who cancels in bad weather, even when that costs you a day.

What can we not answer yet?

These are fair questions to put to a seller, in writing. We have no sourced answer to any of them, so we leave them open.

  • What single supplement applies across the market, if any standard exists.
  • Whether any rule on gender in shared cabins holds across boats; the policies we can cite are set boat by boat.
  • How few guests a shared departure can carry before it is dropped.
  • How many crew a boat carries per guest, and whether medical staff sail.
  • Whether hot water, overnight power and Wi-Fi meet any fleet-wide standard.
  • Whether last-minute or group reductions, peak-season supplements or fuel surcharges follow any market rule.
  • What official park tariffs will apply in 2027, or how sellers will price that year.
  • What sea state BMKG forecasts month by month, or how long Labuan Bajo to Padar takes by phinisi.
  • Whether a public register can confirm an operator's licence or SiOra access.
  • How many tourist boats are active in Labuan Bajo.

Which published prices did we check?

Public rates and fees from third-party sellers and guides, each with its source and the month we checked it. Most of these are published rates for one seller or one boat, not a market average, and they can change without notice; check the source before you rely on a figure.

Which questions come up first?

Are shared cabins priced per person or per cabin?

Per person, in most listings we cite, with a minimum number of paying guests set by the cabin. So a two-guest minimum means one traveller may have to pay for two to keep that room.

Are private charters priced per person or per boat?

Per boat. Komodo Trips' terms say so, and Komodo Resort's guide describes a fixed-period hire of vessel, captain and crew for one price, with the itinerary agreed in advance.

Where do cabin charters depart from?

Labuan Bajo, in most cases. It is the town with Komodo's airport, and Komodo Resort names its harbour as the usual starting point. Your written confirmation should name the exact meeting point.

Do phinisi cabins have air conditioning?

Some do, and we cannot call it standard. The sales staff behind one shared cruise call its air conditioning cold and its Wi-Fi imperfect at some hours. Ask about your boat and your cabin rather than the class.

Is a deposit required to book?

Yes, on the seller terms we cite. Komodo Trips asks at least 50 per cent, and other sellers ask different shares at different stages. Pay only after the boat and cabin are confirmed in writing.

Do fares include national park entrance fees?

Usually not. They sit outside Salam Ransel's shared price, for example, though one cruise seller says its fare contains them. Ask for the answer in writing, since the charge recurs for each day in the park.

How do I reach the desk?

If your question is missing here, ask it on WhatsApp 6281139414563 or at bd@juaraholding.com. Tell us which seller's terms or boat you are looking at, and the desk will answer what it can and say plainly what it cannot. An answer on chat is guidance, and the written offer is what counts.

Comparing a Komodo cabin or a whole boat?

Send the desk your dates, group size, and cabin or whole-boat preference. The desk replies in writing.
