Sourced figures: rates in the table carry their source and check month. Most are published by a single seller for a single boat, so they are not a market price, and nothing here is legal advice.

Choose a day trip if your time or budget is short and you mainly want the headline stops: one traveller found a one-day boat covered most of what the two-night trip offered, with the Kalong bats the main gap. Choose a night or two aboard if you want a slower pace, the Kalong sunset and a cabin you have checked first.

What does a day trip cover?

Possibly more than a seller of longer trips would lead you to expect. The traveller behind Mini Adventures, who has no cabin to sell, says one day on a boat gets you most of what the two-night trip does, and that the bats at Kalong are the main thing you give up. That is one person's judgement, formed on one budget boat. It still deserves weight beside the agents, whose interest runs towards selling more nights.

The sources offer no standard day-trip stop list. Salam Ransel sells one-day boat tours from Labuan Bajo every day, and its rate appears in the price table on this page, but stops differ by product. They differ on longer trips too. A TourRadar listing visits Rinca for the dragons, where a Komodo Trips itinerary lands on Komodo Island. So ask any day-trip seller for the actual stops and the order, and check the ones you came for are on it.

What does a night aboard add?

Salam Ransel frames the step up in two stages: the two-day trip adds a night on board and the Kalong sunset, and the three-day trip is the most relaxed option, with more snorkelling. The Komodo Trips itinerary shows what that spread looks like on paper. Day one takes in Kelor, Manjarite and Kalong. Day two is the long one: Padar, Long Pink Beach, Komodo Island, Taka Makassar and Manta Ray Point. Day three is Kanawa alone.

Look at the clock before you count days. That listing prints 10.00 to 11.00 and 12.00 to 13.00 beside its last stop, which may describe that day alone, so ask your seller when a trip really starts and ends. The listing's plan is also tentative.

A night is only as good as the room you sleep in, and the same traveller's budget cabin, described in our guide to shared cabins, is a useful corrective. Their own verdict: next time, a private cabin. Before you pay for a night, read our guide to phinisi cabin types.

Is a speedboat day tiring?

It can be, on one agent's account. Komodo Touristic warns that a one-day speedboat tour is fast and can be tiring, and in the same breath calls three days and two nights the ideal for a relaxing trip. Weigh that with its source in mind: this is an agent whose lists include multi-day boats, so its advice and its stock point the same way. That does not make the warning wrong. A day of fast crossings and repeated landings is a different thing from a day at anchor, and you know your own tolerance.

Not every one-day tour is a speedboat, so ask which vessel you will be on. Ask too for the day's timings, including the return. We have no sourced crossing time from Labuan Bajo to Padar or Komodo Island. If you are prone to motion sickness in either format, read seasickness on a phinisi before choosing.

Which days of the week can you go?

Almost any for a day trip, on one agent's programme, and only some for a night aboard. Salam Ransel's one-day tours run every day, while its shared overnight trips leave weekly. Others publish fixed patterns too. Green Rinjani describes its three-day shared tour as departing every Monday and Friday. Phinisi Trip lists three-day shared runs leaving on a Friday or a Monday.

That can settle the question before any comparison of comfort. If you have two free days in the middle of a week and no boat leaves at the start of them, the day trip is what remains. Lay your flights over the published days of two or three boats, and see what actually fits.

Either way, allow room at the start. Salam Ransel wants you in Labuan Bajo the day before the trip, and Komodo Island Tour recommends the same. A daily departure gives you more room here, since another boat leaves the next day if your seller will move you. The page on arriving before boarding has more.

How do the two formats compare on cost?

The price table shows both from one agent, which makes the comparison fairer than most: Salam Ransel's one-day tour, and the lowest published rate on its shared three-day list for a superior boat. Both are from-rates, on different vessels, so read the gap as a rough scale. A better cabin on the longer trip moves it further.

The fare is not the whole gap. Samara Liveaboard reports that the park ticket is charged for each day in the park, so added days can add ticket lines, while the cabin, meals and other inclusions differ by seller. Our page on cabin charter cost gathers more published fares if you want to test the longer format at a higher standard.

Who should choose which?

This site's subject is cabin trips, so weigh our view with that in mind. For a good number of travellers, a day trip will be enough.

  • Pick the day trip if you have one spare day, if your dates fit no weekly departure, if you mainly want the headline stops, or if the only overnight you can afford is a shared cabin you would dread.
  • Pick one night if the Kalong bats and a night on the water are what you came for and you do not want to give up three days. The page on two days or three compares the overnight formats directly.
  • Pick two nights if pace matters to you, you want more time in the water, and you have seen and accepted the cabin in writing.
  • Check age limits first if you are bringing children. A three-day phinisi listing on TourRadar sets a minimum age of 15 and a group size of 6 to 20, and rules like that can decide the matter.

What do travellers ask when choosing between them?

Do one-day tours run every day?

Yes, according to Salam Ransel, which says its one-day tours run daily while its shared overnight trips leave weekly. That is one agent's programme. Confirm your date with whoever sells your tour, because weather and park registration can still intervene.

Is a night on a budget boat worth it?

Not always. The Mini Adventures traveller got a shared bunk room and a basic shared bathroom on a budget two-day boat, and came away wanting a private cabin. If a shared room is all your budget allows, compare it honestly with a day trip.

Which island will show me the dragons?

That depends on the trip, because some visit Rinca and others Komodo Island. A TourRadar listing goes to Rinca, and a Komodo Trips itinerary goes to Komodo Island. Ask the seller which stop your boat makes and have it written down.

Does a day trip avoid the park ticket?

No. Samara Liveaboard's account has every person paying for each day in the park, so a single day still carries one. Ask whether your day tour's price includes it.

Will I see the Kalong bats on a day trip?

Probably not. The traveller who rated the day trip highly singles out the bats as its gap, and Salam Ransel ties Kalong to the overnight format. If the bats matter to you, plan on at least one night aboard.

Which published prices did we check?

Public rates and fees from third-party sellers and guides, each with its source and the month we checked it. Most of these are published rates for one seller or one boat, not a market average, and they can change without notice; check the source before you rely on a figure.
