Often yes, because some sellers make it a condition. Salam Ransel requires comprehensive travel insurance that covers cancellation, Dive Komodo makes travel and scuba cover mandatory on liveaboards and charters, and Neptune Liveaboards strongly recommends it. Your own seller's terms decide. We recommend no policy, and we cannot confirm any compulsory passenger cover on these boats.
Do sellers require insurance?
Some do, some urge it, and the listings that sell you the trip leave it for you to buy. Salam Ransel and Dive Komodo set it as a condition of the booking, not as advice, so read your terms before assuming it is optional.
| Seller | Position | Cover it names |
|---|---|---|
| Salam Ransel (agent) | Required for all its trips | Comprehensive travel insurance that also covers cancellation |
| Dive Komodo (dive operator) | Mandatory for all liveaboard and charter bookings | Travel and scuba insurance covering evacuation and hyperbaric treatment |
| Neptune Liveaboards (liveaboard operator) | Strongly recommended | Cancellation, medical evacuation and liability |
| Komodo Resort (charter guide) | Advice to check your policy | That it covers boat trips, and diving if you dive |
The other sellers we read treat insurance simply as a cost outside the fare. Salam Ransel, Phinisi Trip and a Tripadvisor private listing all list it among the exclusions. Budget for it as a separate line, and ask your own seller to confirm where it stands. If a seller requires a policy, also ask when it wants proof, and in what form.
What should the policy cover?
The sellers' own lists are the most practical place to start, since they show which risks these companies put in writing. We cannot advise you on a product, and the wording of a policy is what counts, so use these as questions for your insurer. Get the replies in writing.
- Is an overnight boat trip covered? This is Komodo Resort's point, and it is easy to skip. Name the activity: several nights sleeping on a tourist boat in Indonesia.
- Is trip cancellation covered, and for what reasons? Salam Ransel and Neptune Liveaboards both name cancellation.
- Does a harbour closure or sailing ban count as a covered cause? Ask this one specifically, because such a closure has happened.
- Is medical evacuation included from a boat in a remote area? Dive Komodo and Neptune Liveaboards both name evacuation.
- Is diving covered, and to what depth or qualification? Dive Komodo also asks for hyperbaric treatment, so check that as a line of its own.
- Is liability included? Neptune Liveaboards names it.
- Are missed departures and delayed flights covered? Check the wording for a connection that lands you in Labuan Bajo after the boat has left.
- Are non-refundable park tickets a claimable loss? A small sum, but worth a line.
Then send your insurer's written answer to the seller if the seller requires cover. It is better to find a mismatch at home than on the pier.
Does a seller policy cover your trip?
Do not assume it. Neptune Liveaboards says its dive insurance does not cover trip cancellation. That sentence is a useful warning about the word itself, because a boat can be described as insured and you may still have no cover for what you are worried about. If any seller says "insurance is included" or "the boat is insured", ask who is covered, for which events, up to what amount, and whether you can see the document.
We have not found an official document setting out compulsory passenger insurance on Labuan Bajo tourist boats, so plan as though your own policy is the only one you can rely on, and treat anything else as a bonus. A request to see a boat's papers is covered among the checks on our safety page.
Why does cancellation cover matter here?
Because the seller's terms may leave you holding the loss, and because the event may be nobody's fault. Three published facts make the case together.
Refunds are narrow. Neptune Liveaboards stops refunding at the 90-day mark, and a route changed for safety earns nothing back. The other published ladders are compared in cancellation and refund terms by seller.
Force majeure can fall on you. In such events Dive Komodo chooses between refund and new date, and it takes no responsibility for losses that follow, flights among them. So even a generous outcome on the boat fare may leave your flights and hotel uncovered by the seller.
Closures do happen. Indonesia Expat reported tourist vessels losing their sailing permits from 26 December 2025 for more than a month, based on BMKG weather information, with a brief opening on 9 to 11 January and an extension to 27 January 2026. Reports differ slightly on the opening date. A trip dated in that window, outside the brief opening, had no harbour to leave from however well it was planned. Whether a policy pays out in those circumstances is the point to pin down in advance, which is why the closure question appears on the list above. Our page on charters in bad weather has the fuller account.
Timing matters as well, since the deposit is the first money at risk. Your insurer can tell you whether a later purchase changes what is covered, and whether events already known at the time of purchase are excluded.
What happens if you need a hospital?
You would be going back to Labuan Bajo at the earliest, and possibly further. Komodo Touristic, an agent, says there is no major hospital in the park and that the nearest main hospital is in Labuan Bajo. Assume no medical staff sail unless the seller tells you otherwise in writing. How far a transfer beyond Labuan Bajo might go is a question for your insurer's assistance line.
Three small preparations make a real difference if something does happen:
- Tell the seller early about any condition. Neptune Liveaboards says medical, dietary and accessibility needs must be communicated at least 14 days before departure, and that some conditions may not suit liveaboard travel. Other sellers may be more or less strict, so raise it at booking.
- Carry your policy details on paper. Salam Ransel says phone signal is limited around the islands. Write the policy number and assistance line down, and give a copy to someone travelling with you, or to the guide if you are alone.
- Ask how the boat calls for help. The same Komodo Touristic page lists marine VHF among the equipment to ask about. Ask the crew how they would get a sick guest ashore, and how long they would expect it to take from where you will be sailing.
What else should you know about insurance?
Is travel insurance mandatory for a Komodo cabin charter?
On some bookings, yes. Salam Ransel requires it for all its trips and Dive Komodo for all its liveaboards and charters. Other sellers only recommend it, so check your own terms and ask whether proof is needed.
Does the charter fare include insurance?
No, on the listings we have read. Salam Ransel, Phinisi Trip and a Tripadvisor private listing all exclude it. If a seller says otherwise, ask who is insured, for what, and whether you can read the document.
Is there compulsory passenger insurance on Labuan Bajo tourist boats?
We cannot confirm it either way, because we have not found an official document on the subject. Do not plan around it. Ask your seller in writing, and hold your own travel cover regardless.
Is there a doctor on board?
We cannot say, since we have found no source that states it. Assume there is none unless the seller confirms it in writing, and carry any medication you rely on along with your policy details.
Do I need scuba cover if I only snorkel?
Not on Komodo Resort's advice, which ties diving cover to diving. Dive Komodo's rule is worded for all its liveaboard and charter bookings, though, so a non-diver booking there should ask what it expects from them.

How do I reach the desk?
We cannot advise on a policy, but we can help you work out what a seller's terms ask of you. Paste the clause and say which boat it comes from. WhatsApp +62 811-3941-4563 or email bd@juaraholding.com.
Send the desk your dates, group size, and cabin or whole-boat preference. The desk replies in writing.
