Expect a range, because we know of no fleet-wide comfort standard for Komodo boats. Reports run from a private bathroom, cold air conditioning and hot water on one higher-grade shared cruise to one very basic shared bathroom on a budget boat. Treat each comfort feature as a question about one named cabin on one named boat, and get the answer before you pay.

Comfort is the area where a listing's few words carry the most weight and the least detail. The accounts below come from both ends of the market: a traveller who was surprised, agents who warn buyers, and a seller's staff describing a boat they sell. Each one holds for the boat it describes, and none of them speaks for a whole class of boat.

Is the bathroom inside your cabin?

Sometimes, and on budget boats you should assume it may not be. An agent, Komodo Touristic, says the bathroom on many budget tours is shared and lies outside a bunk-bed cabin. One traveller's budget-boat account, given in the shared-cabin guide, is a sharper example. Queues are another matter, covered on our page on guest numbers.

Higher up the range the picture changes. One open-trip listing on Komodo Trips gives its Master Cabin a queen bed and a private bathroom, while staff of the seller of one shared cruise, writing on Hello Flores, describe a private room, bed and bathroom as the model on that boat. Notice how the Komodo Trips listing attaches the private bathroom to a named cabin type. A boat can offer an ensuite in one cabin and none in the next, so the boat's general description does not answer the question for your room.

The table sets the accounts side by side. A dash means the source does not address that feature.

Will the cabin have air conditioning?

On some boats, and you still need to ask whether it works and when it runs. The firmest statement we can cite comes from Hello Flores, which reports cold air conditioning on one cruise. Bear in mind that a member of the sales staff wrote it. Komodo Touristic takes a warier line and lists a working air conditioner among the things to check in a cabin, which suggests a listed unit should not be taken on trust.

A separate Hello Flores guide says air conditioning in some budget shared cabins runs only at night, to save fuel, and Neptune Liveaboards says budget boats may have fans instead. No source gives a share of boats with air conditioning. A unit that runs only after dark is a different product from one that runs all day, so ask directly: what hours does it run in this cabin?

Can you count on hot water?

No, not without asking. The only specific report we can cite is the Hello Flores account of hot water in lower-deck cabins on one cruise. It does not tell us about that boat's upper-deck cabins, and it says nothing about any other boat.

That leaves a short set of useful questions. Is hot water available in this cabin or only in some? Is it available at all hours? How long does the supply last when the boat is full? If showering in warm water matters to you, have the answer written down. If it does not, you have just removed one reason to pay for a higher cabin class, which is useful to know when comparing fares.

Will you have Wi-Fi or phone signal?

Plan on patchy connections at best. Phinisi Trip lists Wi-Fi as included on one boat, and Hello Flores reports that Wi-Fi on one cruise is not perfect at all hours. Salam Ransel calls signal limited around the islands and rates Telkomsel highest for coverage in Flores. Those sources do not measure speed or say where on the route signal returns, so read them as a warning rather than a map.

The practical response is to finish anything urgent in Labuan Bajo before boarding and to tell people at home you may be unreachable for stretches. If your work needs a reliable connection, a cabin charter may not suit those days at all, however the listing words it. On a listing, the word Wi-Fi says nothing about speed or hours.

Does a private cabin always come with its own bathroom?

No. OpenTripKomodo, a Labuan Bajo marketplace, gives the plainest counter-example: on one boat a Private Bunk Cabin has its own door but an outside shared bathroom, while shared cabins on two other boats have a bathroom inside. So the word "private" can describe the door and nothing else.

That marketplace's boat pages carry the answer in two Indonesian phrases. "Kamar mandi dalam" means the bathroom is inside the cabin. "Kamar mandi bersama" means it is shared. Look for those words under the cabin on a listing, not in the cabin's name. Where neither appears, ask which applies to your cabin and how many people use it.

Does it matter where on the boat your cabin sits?

It can, on one operator's account. Neptune Liveaboards says cabins closer to the engine room are noisier and that stern cabins feel more motion than midship ones. It adds that boats of 8 to 12 guests tend to move more in a swell than boats of 16 to 20. These are one operator's observations, and nobody has measured them across Komodo boats.

A layout drawing settles most of this before you pay. Ask the seller for a layout drawing if it has one. Mark your cabin on it, then ask how far it sits from the engine room, whether it is at the stern, and whether a generator runs beside it overnight.

What else affects comfort on board?

The deck and the storage matter more than most listings suggest, since you spend your days on one and live out of the other. The Mini Adventures traveller liked that boat's deck but found it open to rain, and had nowhere in the cabin to put bags. Those are small points on paper, and they shape two or three days in a confined space.

Sleep has its own factors. On one cruise, Hello Flores says, the crew pick calm water to anchor for the night, which helps anyone prone to motion sickness, a subject our seasickness page covers. Bed layout counts for as much. One listed Triple Cabin pairs a queen bed with a single bunk, so a third adult may end up in the bunk. Those labels get a full treatment in our guide to phinisi cabin types. Cabin dimensions and headroom are not published in a form we can compare, so photos are your closest substitute.

How do you verify comfort before paying?

Ask for specifics about one cabin, and keep the answers. Komodo Resort's charter guide advises getting the boat name and photos of the actual cabins. Komodo Touristic's own cabin checks are an air conditioner and toilet in working order, no mould, and clean cooking water. Put together with the reports above, that gives you a list you can send to any seller:

  1. What is the boat's name, and which cabin is this quote for?
  2. Can you send recent photos of this cabin and its bathroom, not of the boat's top suite?
  3. Does this cabin have its own bathroom, and if not, how many guests share one?
  4. Does the air conditioning work now, and what hours does it run?
  5. Is there hot water in this cabin, and at what times?
  6. Is there Wi-Fi on board, and where on the route does it work?
  7. Is there a covered deck area for rain and for the midday sun?
  8. Where do bags go during the trip?
  9. How is drinking and cooking water handled?
  10. How many guests does the boat carry on this departure?

Once you know the cabin, our packing guide helps you plan around whatever it lacks, and a soft bag is a sensible choice if storage turns out to be tight.

What do guests ask about cabin comfort?

Do all cabins on a shared trip have ensuite bathrooms?

No. Budget tours often place the bathroom outside the cabin, on Komodo Touristic's account, and one Komodo Trips listing mentions a private bathroom for its Master Cabin in particular. Ask about the exact cabin on your quote.

Is air conditioning standard in Komodo cabins?

Not that we can establish. One seller's staff report cold air conditioning on one cruise, and one agent tells buyers to check that the unit works. Ask whether your cabin has it and which hours it runs.

Is there Wi-Fi on board?

On some boats. Phinisi Trip lists it on one boat, and the Hello Flores account says it falls short at certain hours on another. Plan as though you will be offline for stretches of the trip.

Will my phone work during the trip?

Only some of the time. Salam Ransel describes signal as limited around the islands, so download what you need before boarding and tell family when you expect to be back in range.

Can I ask for photos of my actual cabin?

Yes, and you should. Komodo Resort's guide advises it. Check that the photos match the cabin named on your quote and not the boat's top suite.
